by Marsha Middleton

After reading in the VSLA newsletter about former president Rebecca Brown’s heading from her school in Warsaw to a school in Egypt, Dollinda Lund and I, who had served with Rebecca on GMBA, planned to have lunch with her at the Perennial Pleasures Nursery and Tea Garden in East Hardwick while she was in Vermont. Unfortunately, at the last minute, Rebecca couldn’t attend, but serendipitously, who should arrive for lunch but VSLA librarians Karen Gockley, who is librarian in Beijing, China, and Harriette Phillips-Hamblett, who was shortly to leave for a library in Milan, Italy. We had a great time talking over old times and hearing of Karen’s adventures in China, as well as Harriette’s plans for her three years in Europe. In the picture, we are all holding purses from China given to us by Karen.

Marsha Middleton reminds us… This year’s summit will take place on Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23 in Chicago. The bulk of this year’s summit will consist of rapid-fire presentations—to provide attendees with as much information in as lively a fashion as possible. Following these presentations, there will be “Continue the Conversation” sessions, where attendees will have an opportunity to mingle with presenters. In addition, keynote speeches will frame the summit and there will be several panels presentations as well. Also, look for a fun gadget palooza of reading devices, a face-off debate on the iPad and picture books, and much more. Here is the link for Conference Information
